The legendary herbal variety Critical Mass is a reworked version of the famous classic “Big Bud.” It gets its name from the gigantic, extremely heavy flower clusters that reach such a massive weight at harvest time that the plant’s branches can break under the load without extra support.
This variety features genetics that are strongly Indica-dominant, usually consisting of 80% Indica and 20% Sativa. It was created by purposefully crossing the robust Afghani landrace with the world-renowned, stable Skunk #1. Thanks to this combination, Critical Mass brings together the intense resin production and resilience of Afghan Indica with the vigorous growth and vitality of Skunk.
When grown indoors, the plant reaches a medium height of about 70 to 100 centimeters, making it perfect for compact grow boxes. Outdoors, given a long enough growing season, it can reach an impressive size of 180 to 250 centimeters. The yields from Critical Mass are legendary and among the highest available. Indoors, after a very short flowering period of just 6 to 8 weeks, this variety produces an impressive 550 to 750 grams per square meter. Outdoors, typically ready for harvest in September, a single plant can yield anywhere from 500 to over 1000 grams, depending on conditions.
Critical Mass is basically a very easy-to-care-for and vigorous plant, which is why it’s often considered absolutely beginner-friendly. It forgives minor mistakes with nutrients and almost grows on its own. However, it does come with a specific challenge for both beginners and experts: Due to the extreme density and enormous size of its flower clusters, this variety is highly susceptible to mold (bud rot) late in flowering. Indoors, it’s essential to keep humidity low and ensure strong air circulation. Outdoors, it should be protected from prolonged autumn rains, which is why experienced growers like to cultivate it in well-ventilated greenhouses or use advanced support techniques (like Scrog or nets) to keep the heavy branches from snapping.
The aroma of Critical Mass is intense, deep, and reminiscent of the “old school” varieties from the 1990s. The flavor is a harmonious blend of honey-sweet notes and a strong, smoky base, highlighted by woody nuances and the typical pungent Skunk aroma. The dominant terpene profile is led by three terpenes: myrcene, which is responsible for the earthy, musky notes and forest floor scent; caryophyllene, which adds a spicy pepper note; and limonene, which brings a fresh, subtle hint of citrus.
The effect of Critical Mass is extremely physical and is described as a heavy, deeply relaxing “body buzz.” It is strongly sedating, calming, and soothing, making it a classic variety for late evenings or for supporting restful sleep and relaxation. The typical THC content is very potent, ranging from 18% up to 27% THC depending on phenotype and grower, while the CBD content in the standard version is very low at under 1%.
